Recommended Table of Exposures for Moving Walkers, Joggers, Cyclists and Cars

Ever wonder what the best exposure settings are for typical moving objects such as moving walkers, joggers, cyclists, or even cars? Well below you’ll find a table that gives you a good start.

The table provides a rough estimate of the approximate exposures you’ll need when shooting common situations of moving people. If you’re at a place like central park you could possibly try all five of these exposure examples within a short period of time.

Recommended table of exposures for moving walkers, joggers, cyclists, and cars.

Directly Facing (sec)Right angles (sec)Diagonally (sec)
Walker1/301/1251/60
Jogger1/601/2501/125
Cyclist1/2501/20001/1000
Car1/1001/40001/2000

The examples are recommended from a distance of about 90 feet (30 m), and if you’re closer to the person you’ll need to set your shutter speed even faster, while farther away it would be better to set it a bit closer. This is also assuming you’re shooting in the daytime with proper lighting.

Give these exposures a try, and post an image below to see if they worked for you!
